After all of the unbridled avarice of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, today is the day to give back...its #GivingTuesday! This year, the Chicadelphia family (aka me and my hubby) are donating a new toy for a boy and girl to drop off for the #MarineToysforTotsFoundation. I'm also making a donation to the #SundayBreakfastRescueMission here in Philadelphia.

#MarineToysforTotsFoundation provides gifts for economically disadvantaged children. Could you imagine waking up Christmas morning thinking Santa passed you by? I know I couldn't. I consider myself to have been very blessed as a child growing up in a middle class suburban family. My parents went through some tough times though and they always managed to make Christmas happen for me and my younger brother. Some parents can't do it and that's where Toys for Tots makes the magic happen. It's literally the easiest donation to make; buy a toy and drop it off in a Toy for Tots drop box (unwrapped) and make Christmas special for a little boy or girl who wouldn't be getting presents otherwise. You can head to their website and find the nearest drop box (I see them everywhere in our area).

The #SundayBreakfastRescueMission ministers in the name of Jesus Christ to the physical and spiritual needs of homeless and disadvantaged people in the Philadelphia area. Founded in 1878, it is the third oldest Rescue Mission in the country. The Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission serves the homeless through two locations in Philadelphia: a shelter in Center City and a transitional home for women in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. The Center City shelter also houses a long-term recovery program for men. I actually found out about the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission purely by chance. Living in an apartment, we sometimes get former tenants mail (if you ever lived in an apartment, you know what I mean). One day I received something to a former tenant from the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission. I googled the organization and immediately saw what amazing things they had done for the homeless and disadvantaged in Philadelphia. The Chicadelphia family have had our own hardships over the past two years, but we have been able to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table, by the grace of God. I can’t begin to imagine what life must be like for those who can’t. The mission of the #SundayBreakfastRescueMission really hit home with me, so we will be making a donation today in honor of #GivingTuesday.

There are so many charities and so many people in need. Some others that I am fond of are Alex’s Lemonade Stand and Philabundance. Are you donating today in honor of #GivingTuesday? What are your favorite charities or non-profit organizations that you support? Let everyone know in the comments below so we can spread their message to everyone :)
